Is this true? Will Caroline Kennedy be appointed to serve the remainder
of Hillary Clinton's term in the Senate? What the hell is going on in
this country? .... are Senate seats like so many leaves in the autumn
air, where one can simply take a swipe and become an owner?
The
Senate was designed by the founding fathers to be the chamber in which
the state governments would have representation in the new republic.
Early senators were not placed in office by popular vote but sent to
New York and then Washington D.C. by the state legislatures. The Senate
was supposed to be the wise and patient chamber of Congress, in which
important matters were to be debated by great statesmen such as Henry
Clay and Daniel Webster. For many decades the Senate was the
battleground for the countless battles over the issue of slavery, the
compromises forged in that sacred chamber were able to hold off the
Civil War for at least 30 years. However, we now award Senate seats to
those with certain last names. The great State of New York will hand
over one half of its representation in the United States Senate from a
Clinton to a Kennedy.
Is it a joke now?
